Human Development Index



  • Composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income indices to rank countries into four tiers of human development.
  • Created by economist Mahbub ul Haq, economist Amartya Sen in 1990, and published by the United Nations Development Programme. 
  • Human Development Report the HDI combines three dimensions: from 2011
    • A long and healthy life: Life expectancy at birth.
    • Education index: Mean years of schooling and Expected years of schooling
    • A decent standard of living: GNI per capita (PPP US$).
  • Top Three : Norway , Australia , Netherlands.
  • Bottom Three : Democratic republic of Congo , Niger , Burundi.
  • India's Ranking In HDI : 134
  • Multidimensional Poverty Index  :
    • developed in 2010 by Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative and the United Nations Development Programme.
    • reflects deprivations in very rudimentary services and core human functioning for people across 104 countries.
