Cervical Cancer

Symptoms:

One of the most common symptoms of cervical cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding, but in some cases there may be no obvious symptoms. Also, moderate pain during sexual intercourse and vaginal discharge are symptoms of cervical cancer.

Cause:

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection appears to be a necessary factor in the development of almost all cases (90+%) of cervical cancer.Other than that smoking is also one of the factor.

Victims :

Cervical cancer is the most common malignancy among Indian women, particularly those who marry early.

Diagnosis :

The device AV Magnivisualizer which was developed by the Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has 95 per cent accuracy for detecting pre-cancerous lesions.

How it Works :

The device has a white light source with variable interchangeable magnification and can be operated on a 12- volt battery in rural and semi-urban areas where electric supply is not regular. Magnivisualizer has been found to pick up 1.5 times more high-grade pre-cancerous lesions than the ordinary tungsten light. The AV Magnivisualizer is a magnifying device that visualizes the cervix and assists a doctor or a health worker in examination. If the test shows suspected cancer, acetic acid can be applied on the cervix and if the area turns white it indicates a high probability of cervical cancer. Such patients would then be referred for cytology, a standard test to confirm cervical cancer.

Tests Available :

“A V Magnivisualizer is for screening, not diagnosing. It is the first step. The standard tests so far for detecting cervical cancer are cervical cytology, also called Pap test, or a human papillomavirus (HPV) test, or a combination of both. This is a user-friendly device which costs about Rs 10,000 as against the present devices which cost between Rs 8-10 lakh and are beyond the reach of most people.
